In the 30′s Depression, food became scarce and many things unavailable. But then 50% of the people grew their own food. Every body traded for goods and services because there was no money. No jobs. Losing a house is one thing, but no food is quite another.

Those were a special kind of people in New Orleans. Basically, food and necessities will be dropped from planes and distributed first come first serve.
You won’t need food when you’ve been vapourised in global thermonuclear war.
