What do you think of mission trips?

trips48 What do you think of mission trips?
I have been wanting to go to a mission trip to help those who are less unfortunate than I am but my dad doesn’t want me to go…because of the money spent to go there and because “by the time you leave the place, they are going to be back where they started again”. Do you think mission trips are important? Do you end up influencing’s someone’s life for the better?

Mission trips are for others as well as you. You gain as much from a mission trip as the ones you help. I served 7 months this year on a mission field and don’t regret a minute of it. If you dad won’t let you go try finding a mission near you. There has to be a chiristian school somewhere near you. See how you can help. Maybe tudor a child in reading.

I think that they are horrible and destructive. I mean a religious right sends in a mission to “fix” or “help” a culture that is valuable in its own right. All a mission does is convert christians from non-christians by plying them with candy and mirrors!! Missionary work is a crime against humanity in all of it’s forms!!

I agree with Free A, above. George Carlin said it best:

Religion is like a lift in your shoes. But that doesn’t give you the right to go down and nail lifts onto the Natives’ feet!

well, im planning on going on one this summer. actually, its a great opportunity. most companies that you go on mission trips with will provide you many opportunities to fund raise, and its not very hard to come up with a lot. local churches are usually willing to help too.

the souls that are touched, you may assume, will go back to their old ways when u leave… but you planted a Seed… and someone else may have to sow that seed but you planted it and praying for it to grow is all you can do at that point besides contact. and yes, they will see how far you went just for them and there are nice people where you go. They are very important, it shows the LOVE of not only YOU but your country and area too. Yes, you will influence them for the greater :D

I guess it depends on the purpose of the Mission. Are you going to convert someone to your way of thinking, or are you going to help someone in need.
I am one of the youth leaders at my church and we took middle school and high school youth on a mission trip this summer. The older kids worked on a house for Habitat For Humanity and the younger ones worked “behind the scenes” at a St. Vincent dePaul Thrift Store.
All of the kids learned a lot about helping others and being thankful for how blessed they were in their own lives. It was a priviledge to go on the trip with them.
