An outboard motor boat can pull a water skier at a cruising speed of 28mi/h in still water. the boat takes a skier for a ride in a river that flows at 6mi/h . the boat takes the skier upstream and then returns home. the trip takes one hour. how far upstream does it travel?

    In this case the skier is irrelevent. The formula will simply be the speed of the boat.
    22t – 34(1 – t) = 0 , shows speed up and down, and that time = 1
    22t – 34 + 34t = 0
    56t = 34
    t = .607 hr
    .607 * 22 = 13.36 miles, time upstream is .607 hr
    (1 – .607) = .393 hr
    .393 * 34 = 13.36 miles , time downstream is .393 hr
